Starting an Anime DVD Collection

If you think that cartoons are just for kids, think again. Anime comics, a popular Japanese import, are elevating the concept of cartoon shows as forms of art. If you have watched and enjoyed anime before, consider starting an anime DVD collection.

Where to Purchase Anime DVDs

Anime DVDs are enjoying a huge success in the United States. As a result, this popular form of entertainment can easily be found in places, such as:
  • anime tradeshows
  • comic books or specialty stores
  • local video stores
  • online retailers and auction sites.
Web sites typically carry a much larger selection of anime DVDs than video stores or comic book stores. Most sites have extensive search options, as well as best seller lists and rare DVD lists.

When purchasing DVDs online through individual sellers, be wary of scammers. Because buying products online prevents you from seeing them and knowing their quality, you could end up with a bootlegged or counterfeit copy if you deal with a scam artist.

Building a Valuable Collection

The cost of anime DVDs can range from a few dollars for a used DVD to over $50 for a boxed set. The best way to ensure top value for your collection is to consider a few points right from the start:
  • Decide if you're an investor or a viewer. Are you strictly a collector or is this a collection you will want to view yourself? Knowing the answer to this question will help you choose the titles to add to your collection. It will also dictate how you will handle and care for the DVDs.

  • Know your market. This includes comparing prices, reading DVD reviews to select the best titles and researching the availability of titles.

Caring for Anime DVDs

When it comes to caring for anime DVDs, follow the same rules as you would for any DVD collection. If you are planning to make a profit from your collection, consider using some of the following tips:
  • Keep all the original packaging. This includes holding on to any brochures, cards or leaflets you might find inside the DVD case. As a rule of thumb, keep anything that came with the original disc when you bought it.

  • Keep handling to a minimum. Avoid taking out the disc as much as possible to reduce the number of fingerprints or smudges that are left behind. Never touch the underside of a DVD. Although minimal handling may not damage a DVD, it can reduce its re-sale value.

  • Leave the DVD in its original, unopened package. This tip is for serious DVD collectors. Leaving a DVD unopened allows for the highest re-sale value. If the title is one of your favorites, consider purchasing an extra copy just for viewing.

  • Store your DVDs properly. Investigate the different types of protective DVD cases available. A specialty case adds extra protection to keep your DVDs in top shape.

With the proper care and selection, many serious collectors are finding that anime DVDs are a fun and valuable addition to their digital entertainment collections.
